HISTORY OF ROCKNSOCKS
RocknSocks was developed by designer and visionary Misty R. Coming from a background in graphic design, she wanted to find a good niche market and something to do that she felt strongly about and could be creative and independent. After having attending several Green Festivals in San Francisco, she knew no matter what business she started it would need to adhere to sustainable business practices.
Misty and her husband are big music fans and go to a lot of music festivals. As a part of that community she had been contributing to several fashion vendors on a graphic design level. She wanted to start a business that contributed to this lifestyle of attending music events. Her husband was always forgetting to pack his socks and would have to borrow hers and it got her thinking about the fact that you can get a whole new wardrobe from independent designers at these music festivals but not some basic accessories. So it all sort of came together at one moment where she decided to bring funky and fashionable eco-friendly socks to rock-n-roll music festivals. That is were the name RocknSocks came from and the business was born.
Eventually they sourced out domestic manufacturers to produce her flashy and funky original designs. She brought the the concept of working with eco-friendly materials to the table. “I wasn’t exactly sure what material I wanted to work with yet, when we started the business, but in going through my research, I discovered regenerated cotton. It’s a wonderful fiber to use because it allows me as a creative designer to maximize my color palette with a small minimal impact. Since it’s not virgin cotton, I do not need to go through the dying process. Coming from an art background, I love to play with color. I often look to my contemporaries and see what kind of fashions they are creating and how our designs can fit in with that.”
At first they took their socks on the road to music festivals with a wagon pulled along by a tricycle. As the buzz grew more and more people wanted the fun earth-friendly foot fashions and eventually they went full circle by exhibiting at the Green Festivals. RocknSocks are now available in boutiques and natural food stores all over the USA and Canada, as well as online.
